"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Dir.
S Hoyland)
Carriageworks theatre, Millenium Square, Leeds
Based
on the short story “Tevye and His Daughters” by Shalom Aleichem,
with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph
Stein, examines such serious issues as poverty, persecution, and struggle.
Set in 1905, the musical takes place in a small Jewish village called
Anatevka in Russia. The story centers around a hard-working dairyman
named Tevye, and the difficulties he must face while trying to maintain
his family’s traditions in an ever-changing world. It all begins
when his oldest daughter Tzeitel pleads with him to allow her to marry
a poor tailor, whom she loves, instead of the middle-aged butcher that
Tevye has already chosen for her. Tevye must decide between the preservation
of his family’s traditions that is keeping the world out or his
daughter’s happiness. All the while, there are evil forces at
work in Anavetka that are threatening to destroy everything he is trying
to preserve.
